Additional Academic Opportunities

Besides the superior academics happening in the classroom, the lower school at Orangewood Christian is unique in the number of academic activities that are extending outside the classroom. This is just another way we continue to “equip our students to transform the world for Christ and His Kingdom”.
  • Kindergarten Canine Companions for Independence: collect items for dogs, read to dogs.
  • 1st grade Samaritan’s Purse: Operation Christmas Child: collecting items & packing shoe boxes.
  • Accelerated Reading (AR) (2nd - 5th grades) Books should be at a student’s reading grade level or above.
  • ACSI Competitions- These are competitions we are involved with that include other Christian Schools. They include: Math Olympics (3rd - 6th), Creative Writing (4- 6th) , and Art competitions (K - 6th).
Field Trips That Connect to Learning in the Classroom

Both in house and off campus field trips help enhance the learning program. Some trips include: Orlando Repertory Theatre, Sea World, Discovery Cove, Orlando Science Center, Central Florida Zoo, Tallahassee, St. Augustine, Gatorland, Butterfly Garden, Ancient Egypt Day, Wycliffe Discovery Center, Campus Crusade, Maitland Historical Society, DeLeon Springs, Pioneer Day, Ancient Greek Day, Legoland, Loaves and Fishes, Kennedy Space Center, Holy Land Experience, Gillespie Rock and Mineral Museum, and Disney.

Mango Languages - Free Spanish Enrichment

This provides an opportunity for students (and their families if you would like)  to continue learning Spanish in their home even if they are not taking Spanish as an elective. The information has been sent to you.

Music Enrichment
  • 3rd graders play the recorder
  • 4th graders play keyboards
  • 5th and 6th can be part of the band or choir
National Honor Society    

There is a National Elementary Honor Society chapter at the lower school and inductions are in the Spring.  Membership is open to students in 4th – 6th grades who demonstrate scholastic and leadership ability and a willingness to serve our school and community. In order to be considered for membership, students must be at OCS for at least one semester, maintain a 3.5 cumulative weighted grade point average, demonstrate integrity, dependability, respect for authority, peers, and property, and inspire others to excellence

Service-Learning at the Lower School

This year with our theme of stewardship, we are learning ways we can be stewards of God’s gifts to us.We will continue our December Serve-a-Thon on December 1st this year for all grade levels.

Spanish Heritage Celebration

This Fall Celebration was an opportunity to expose our students to crafts and authentic music from a Latin American Country.

Third Grade Reading Buddies

Third-grade students pair with kindergarten students to be reading buddies once a week.
